At Lion Academy of Music, our mandolin lessons introduce students to the bright, distinctive sound of this versatile instrument. Whether you’re drawn to folk, bluegrass, Celtic, or classical styles, we’ll guide you through core techniques including pick control, chord shapes, scales, and melody playing.
Beginners start with tuning, posture, and simple tunes, while more experienced players can explore ornamentation, tremolo, and cross-picking. Lessons are tailored to each student’s pace and musical interests, making learning both fun and focused.
The mandolin is a fantastic instrument for solo playing or group ensembles, offering a rich blend of rhythm and melody. We have a 100% exam pass rate and regularly submit students in exams with these current boards ABRSM, LCM, RSL (Rockschool) and Trinity College London.

Together, they offer expert tuition in acoustic and electric guitar, bass, and ukulele, catering to all ages and skill levels. Pete also specialises in Tenor Banjo and Mandolin, making our string offering even more versatile. Whether you’re picking up your first chord or diving into advanced techniques, you’re in great hands with Pete and Rik.

We advise children from the age of 6 upwards benefit from one-to-one lessons. However some younger children can still benefit with shorter lessons.

Yes. We encourage students to pursue examinations, as Grades 6 upwards gain UCAS Points for University. We also offer exam tuition in Classical/Folk/Pop and Musical Theatre depending on what the student may want to pursue.

No. Exams are extremely beneficial in improving confidence and technique, however sometimes they can be scary and time consuming. Some students prefer lessons for enjoyment and a break from all those devices!
